His combative style, his ability to win the ball and carry it forward, and his goals from midfield made him one of the most effective midfielders of the Premier League's formative years. After United he had successful spells at Inter Milan, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers. For England he earned 53 caps and - in 1993 - became the first Black player ever to captain the national team, a historically significant moment in English football.
