His ability to bring the ball out from defence, his reading of the game and his positional awareness made him the model for the modern centre-back a full decade before such a concept existed. For Scotland he earned just 26 caps - a criminally low number for a player of his quality, partly explained by the extraordinary competition in Scottish football at the time.
